Dr Spyros Karvounis

Dr Spyros Karvounis MB BS, MRCPsych - Visiting Honorary Senior Lecturer, Middlesex University Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Karvounis is a practising Consultant Psychiatrist and a Psychotherapist. Over the years, he has been integrating psychiatry with psychotherapy on his clinical practice and teaching. Clinically he concentrates on cases where the psychiatric, personality and social / family / cultural aspects all contribute to the presenting problems and sought solutions. He has led clinical teams in the NHS and was the Clinical Director in psychotherapy Day Hospital that operated along therapeutic community lines for over nine years. In his NHS jobs, he was the lead for the development of psychotherapy services in the whole of the London Borough of Enfield and in his Team. He was also the Clinical Lead of an intensive outpatient service providing Mentalization therapy for people with personality disorders. This later expanded to include all community services through the Complex Needs Team that provided psychiatric and psychotherapy / psychology services across the London Borough of Enfield Concurrent to his psychiatric career and integrated to it has been his extensive training and practice in formal psychotherapies such as Cognitive Analytic Therapy and Jungian Analysis that enables him to continuously develop individualised clinical perspectives in the care of patients. In addition is his long-term interest in the philosophy of psychiatry and psychology as a way of being aware of the premises of thinking and understanding, to develop insight into the limitations of each perspective and to expand his therapeutic approach to the human psyche and its suffering. His commitment to clinical quality with a focus on a positive patient experience encouraged him to become an Associate Medical Director with responsibility for Clinical Governance in Barnet Enfield and Haringey NHS Trust with accountability for three of the Trust’s six Service Lines. Working with colleagues under his leadership, they improved the clinical care in the clinical units. He led the development of clinical protocols for teams across the Trust to improve their practice following learning from in depth reviews of untoward incidents. His own clinical practice unit was chosen by the Trust to represent it in a conference on good practice and innovation across London. Dr Malcolm Hawthorne

Dr Malcolm Hawthorne MA (Oxon) MSc MB BCh FRCPsych Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Hawthorne qualified from Oxford University Medical School in 1981 and developed his interest in Psychiatry after doing research in neurophysiology and working in a therapeutic community. He completed his specialist training at St George’s Hospital conducting research into the assessment of complicated grief. He was appointed in 1994 as a Consultant in Adult Psychiatry in the NHS (Surrey and Hampshire Borders NHS Foundation Trust) with Special Responsibility for Liaison Psychiatry at Frimley Park Hospital where he established and led the Department of Psychological Medicine. He has recently been awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Dr Hawthorne has taught undergraduates and psychiatric trainees and was a Tutor in the NHS. His commitment to medical management and delivery of high quality modern services led to his appointment as the Medical Director of his NHS Trust. The spectrum of conditions that Dr Hawthorne treats includes all general psychiatric conditions including Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, Alcohol Dependence, Bipolar and Psychotic Disorders. Dr Balu Pitchiah

Dr Balu Pitchiah MBBS, MRCPsych, CCST,MBA (OXON) Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Balu qualified from the prestigious Stanley Medical College in Chennai, India before completing his basic psychiatric training in Sheffield. After completing an MBA at the University of Oxford, he decided to pursue his higher training in mental health, particularly focusing on mood disorders and behavioural addictions. Dr Balu gained invaluable experience working at the National OCD Treatment Service and the National Problem Gambling Service where he specialised in alcohol, drug addictions, and eating disorders. Dr Christos Kouimtsidis

Dr Christos Kouimtsidis MBBS, MSc, MRCPsych, CCST, PhD Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Christos Kouimtsidis is one of the foremost authorities on substance misuse in the UK, having dedicated his career over the last two decades to effective intervention. Over the years he has gained immense experience in the treatment of alcohol dependence; opioid, stimulants and other drugs misuse and dependence; complex cases of co-morbidity of mental health and addiction problems; anxiety, panic disorder, depression and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. In his clinical practice he combines the expert skills of the Consultant Psychiatrist in mental health with the special skills of the Addiction Psychiatrist. After qualifying in Medicine in Greece (MBBS equivalent, 1990) Dr Kouimtsidis gained his MSc in Mental Health studies at the University of London (1996) with a specialism in CBT for substance misuse. He completed his basic psychiatric training at Guy’s and St Thomas’s (MRCPsych, 1997). Dr Kouimtsidis then continued his specialist training in Adult Mental Health at South London and St George’s Mental Health Trust and in Addiction Psychiatry as a Clinical Lecturer at the Section of Addictive Behaviour, St George’s University of London (CCST, 2002). He obtained his PhD at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College, London (2009). This doctorate was an investigation of the nature of outcome expectancies in treatment and relapse of alcohol and substance misuse. In 2016 he was honoured by the Royal College of Psychiatrists with a Fellowship. Dr Kouimtsidis is currently working as Consultant Psychiatrist in Addictions at Surreny and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. He is the first Chair of the Mental Health Clinical Academic Group of Surrey Health Partners. He is also a Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College, London. He was a Honorary Senior Research Associate at University College London. Previously, Dr Kouimtsidis was Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Alcohol Research Unit, Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London (2008-2011) and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Section of Addictive Behaviour, St. George’s, University of London (2003-2008). Dr Kouimtsidis has been involved in much quantitative and qualitative research into substance misuse, having received 5 main research grants of a total of 1 million – including the first ever UK trials of psychosocial intervention within substitution treatment and brief alcohol interventions for people with Learning Disabilities . Dr C I Okocha

Dr C I Okocha MB, BS; Ph.D; FRCPsych Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Okocha qualified in 1985 and completed his training in Psychiatry on the Guy’s and St Thomas’ rotation. He completed his doctorate (Ph.D) and post-doctorate research at King’s College Hospital and the Medical Research Council funded section of psychopharmacology, Institute of Psychiatry with international bursaries for visits to Yale University Connecticut and Nuclear Medicine department of Bispebjerg Hospital Denmark. Dr Okocha obtained his Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) diploma in 1992, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree in 1996 and in the same year was appointed consultant psychiatrist/senior lecturer at Greenwich District Hospital and Guy’s & St Thomas’ London. In 2007 he was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (FRCPsych) for his contributions to the field of Psychiatry through his clinical practice, teaching, education and research. He is an international Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. He has a wide area of clinical interest and expertise in psychiatry spanning anxiety, mood, dependence, personality and psychotic disorders, in addition to psychopharmacology which is the use of drugs in treatment of psychological illnesses and has scientific and lay publications in these areas. Dr Okocha was appointed College Tutor for postgraduate psychiatric trainees in 1996 and Clinical Director of Greenwich services in 1999 and demonstrated excellence in his leadership and management skills through his development of high quality and innovative clinical services and implementation of evidence based clinical practice and research. He has received commendations and won many national awards for innovative and high quality care delivered by him with his multidisciplinary clinical team and these include National Association of Psychiatric Intensive Care Units team of the year award; Care Services Improvement Partnership ‘Positive Practice’ award; commendation by Hospital Doctors Award committee; and award of the British Association for Medical Managers. His unit jointly produced leadership-training resources with the National Health Service Institute for Innovation & Improvement and the Oxleas National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) schizophrenia audit tool won a Health Service Journal award for Implementation of NICE Guidelines. Dr Irina Panihhidina

Dr Irina Panihhidina MD, Assoc MRCPsych, CCST Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Irina Panihhidina qualified as a Medical Doctor with First Class Honours and underwent post-graduate training in General Psychiatry in Estonia. She has broadened her professional education at various international organisations, including the Open Medical Institute in Austria, and has presented at the World Psychiatric Association in both St Petersburg, and Hiroshima, Japan. Granted the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training, Dr Panihhidina moved to London and continued working for NHS as a Specialty Doctor in Adult Psychiatry. Her work has led her to developing a special interest in the treatment of mood disorders, including complex depression and bipolar disorder, anxiety and maladjustment crises, personality dysfunction and chronic pain related difficulties as well as psychotic disorders. She has participated in research and published work on anxiety related topics, and also conducts teaching sessions on suicide and self-harm prevention for medical students at University College London. Dr Rafael Euba

Dr Rafael Euba Licentiate in Medicine and Surgery (Spain), MRCPsych Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Rafael Euba attended medical school in his native Spain before training as a psychiatrist in London, where he has worked for over twenty years. He has extensive experience in all areas of psychiatry and particular expertise in the area of brain stimulation for the treatment of depression. Dr Euba oversees rTMS at The London Psychiatry Centre, and is the first clinician in the UK to offer rTMS for the treatment of depression. He has a Fellowship from Duke University in the US and is one of a very small group of brain experts in the UK who can claim to have a deep clinical understanding of this effective antidepressant treatment. He is currently acting as a Specialist Adviser to the Interventional Procedures Programme of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in his capacity as a clinical expert in rTMS. Over the years Dr Euba has looked after psychologically distressed patients with all psychiatric diagnoses, of varying ages and in many different clinical settings. He has a particular interest in the humanistic aspects of psychiatry, evident in many of his publications in academic and general interest journals. However, he is also an expert in the physical and medical spectrum in psychiatry. Dr Andy Zamar MBBCh, LRCP, MRCS, MRCPsych Gaskell Gold Medal & Prize - RCPsych Founder of The London Psychiatry Centre Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Andy Zamar was born in Egypt to a Greek mother and Lebanese father and was educated at a French Catholic school in Cairo (College Des Freres Saint Jean Baptiste de La Salle). His early exposure to a wide and diverse cultural environment developed into a profound understanding of the varied cultural presentations of distress and psychiatric disorders. Dr Zamar is triple qualified in medicine in Egypt (Cairo University), the UK and the USA. He is a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and is on their Roll of Honour due to being awarded The Gaskell Gold Medal & Prize. According to the Royal College of Psychiatrists publication, the Psychiatric Bulletin, “The Gaskell Gold Medal & Prize has always been considered one of the foremost academic distinctions in clinical psychiatry”.
