How do I know if I have bipolar disorder or just depression?
The symptoms of these two conditions can overlap, which is why misdiagnosis is so common. If you find that your “lows” are sometimes accompanied by periods of high energy, racing thoughts, increased irritability, or if standard antidepressants haven’t helped you feel better, it is worth a specialist assessment. We look for “subthreshold” signs that other screenings may miss.
What is bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a serious mental illness responsible for mood swings from extreme highs to extreme lows. Bipolar disorder is an illness which has a severe impact on quality of life. It carries a high depression burden, considerable suicide rate (18%), an early death by 10 years from heart disease in 4/10, and has a very severe impact on relationships. A World Health Organisation (WHO) study found that over a lifetime, the level of disability in bipolar spectrum disorder is greater than all forms of cancer, epilepsy, and all known neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease.
What are the different types of bipolar?
The Zamar Protocol ® (Precision guided high-dose thyroid hormones and rTMS protocol) can be used to treat all types of bipolar disorder. There are three common types: bipolar type I, bipolar type II, and subthreshold bipolar disorder.
Bipolar type I, the classic type, is characterised by a minimum of 7 days of mania and 2 weeks of depression. Those with bipolar type I have had at least one period of mania in their life.
Bipolar type II is characterised by minimum periods of 2 weeks of depression and 4 days of hypomania, a lesser form of elevated mood without periods of full-blown mania.
Subthreshold bipolar disorder or unspecified bipolar disorder is the most common form of bipolar disorder and occurs in 55-60% of all bipolar disorder cases. It will present with symptoms of mania, depression and mixed states but will not meet the duration criteria of 7 days/2 weeks of Bipolar I and 4 days/2 weeks of bipolar II disorders. Symptoms can last as little as minutes to 3 days.
