Dr Ben Janaway is a Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in the diagnosis and management of complex and severe mental illness. He has particular expertise in working with individuals experiencing severe and enduring conditions, especially where psychosocial challenges and personality factors intersect with chronic psychosis.
Dr Janaway takes a proactive, comprehensive approach to care. His practice centres on service user design, autonomy, responsibility and engagement in treatment. He places psychological and social considerations at the heart of management, recognising that recovery is rarely achieved through medication alone. By carefully considering interpersonal dynamics and the broader context of a person’s life, he aims to create effective, sustainable treatment plans tailored to each individual.
During his practice, he has developed a specific clinic interest in complex presentations involving dissocial personality traits alongside enduring psychosis, as well as the interface between mental disorder, personality and the criminal justice system.
Dr Janaway previously worked as a lead consultant psychiatrist on a general adult psychiatric intensive care unit, managing patients with severe mental illness. He has extensive experience across inpatient, liaison, neuropsychiatry, learning disability and community settings. He has also worked independently as an S12-approved psychiatric registrar, managing acute mental health emergencies, inpatient wards and outpatient clinics.
An experienced presenter, Dr Janaway has held talks at national conferences, including the Royal College of Psychiatrists International Congress. His work has included presentations on social media and psychiatry, quality improvement projects and clinic guidance development. He is a contributing author to The Book of Hope (2021) and has presented work on SBAR implementation and hyperprolactinaemia guidance.
Alongside his clinic work, Dr Janaway founded the Sheffield Neuroscience Society and the Synapse Charity Group, reflecting his longstanding interest in neuroscience, education and collaborative professional development.
At The London Psychiatry Centre, Dr Janaway provides structured and collaborative psychiatric care, particularly for those facing complex and enduring mental health challenges.
